The story behind the studio
Artful Leprechaun Studios is a one person operation. I've spent over 26 years working as a software test engineer, but games have always been the thing I wanted to make. I grew up before video games really existed yet. For me, books and imagination had to do the heavy lifting. Fantasy was always my favorite, and Choose Your Own Adventure books most of all. Eventually, I decided to stop waiting and build the kind of CYOA style game I loved as a kid. I wanted to make something made for a phone in your pocket or your tablet while you settle into the couch. A version for PC may come down the road too.The studio name came out of an exhausting brainstorming session. I was having issues finding a name to settle with. A good friend reminded me of a couple memories from the early days, when we first started working together at a startup. Back then, I dressed up as a leprechaun for work every St. Patrick's Day. The first time, we went out to a proper Irish pub for lunch. There I was, a proper leprechaun with my cane, pot of gold and pointy leprechaun hat - the whole costume. On a different day, that same friend and I ended up at the same pub in Durham, again for lunch. That time I ordered a fried bologna grilled cheese sandwich on a whim, expecting a normal sandwich. What came out was closer to a brick. The sandwich was huge and the bologna between the cheese and bread was easily an inch in size. We were stunned and nearly fell out of our seats laughing. I could only finish half of it and had to save the rest for later. That's more or less the spirit the studio runs on: try the strange thing, order the odd sandwich, wear the ridiculous costume, and get the larger than life, unexpected result.Right now I'm building Prisoner of the Crown, a choose-your-own-adventure style narrative game. The first release is a free demo, Prisoner of the Crown: A Spreading Blight, a prequel story that stands on its own, no spoilers, just a taste of the tone and the choices you'll be making..
